Not every tradition we hold pertaining to our faith has to be ancient in origin! Though old traditions can be dear to our hearts, not all are practical for us to continue for a number of reasons. Perhaps it’s not feasible due to your location, financial means, lack of a particular skillset, or dietary troubles. Whatever the reason, it doesn’t make you a bad Christian to discontinue an old tradition. Sometimes the easiest way we can begin to live liturgically is to create traditions that work for us here and now. Maybe they only last for a generation or a few years. The important thing is that they are capable of teaching us something in the process, whether it be something we learn about a favorite saint, or learn to appreciate and build community, or how to grow in temperance.
