I’ll keep this short and sweet and let you do your own research, but did you know that there are at least two traditional times for liturgical bonfires? Easter Vigil, or even just during the Easter season, and also for the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (typically on the vigil).
Leading up to the solemnity of St. John’s Nativity, I thought about the possibility of saving some of our brush pile for a bonfire, but our burn permit was due to run out a few days before, and we’ve been working against the clock and the weather to get things cleaned up. In the end, we had a small bonfire on the actual solemnity because the day before we had temps in the 90s, followed by severe thunderstorms at night.
I love that within the Church, we even take things like cleaning up our brush piles and turn them to the things of God! John came to “ready the way of the Lord.” Even in the acts of cleaning up our homes and yards, we can prepare our hearts for Christ’s coming.
Have you ever had a bonfire for St. John the Baptist’s Nativity?
In Christ,
Danielle
