Welcome to The Liturgical Homestead! My name is Danielle Faust, and I am the author of this blog. I was inspired to write about the topic of liturgical living through the lens of homesteading after feeling prompted to pursue the topic for over the course of a couple of years. At the beginning of 2025, I finally began the endeavor in earnest. The only problem is that I’m still most definitely in the process of uncovering what exactly “liturgical homesteading” looks like.

I am a daughter of the Father, sister and friend of Jesus, and lover of the Holy Spirit. My husband and I will celebrate 20 years as a couple in 2025 and 18 years of marriage. Together, we have 8 beautiful children, from teen to baby. The oldest can drive and has a job. The youngest is learning to walk and talk. Seven of the eight have red hair, just like dad, so don’t let anyone tell you red-heads are going extinct! I am an at-home wife and mother, and I homeschool our children. Yes, all of them. My husband has a full-time job away from home, so I am essentially the homestead manager.

In the summer of 2015, we purchased our homestead. The farm once contained a dairy farm, and the owners raised pigs. Through the decades, building purposes changed and so did the farm intentions. We bought the farm from a retired couple who were homesteaders themselves. The place came complete with a small orchard and a flock of chickens! We declared ourselves homesteaders the following spring.

While both my husband and I were baptized Catholics (my husband had received First Eucharist), we didn’t get confirmed until we were young adults, preparing for marriage. There was so much we didn’t know, and we didn’t truly begin to practice the faith until our sons asked to receiver First Eucharist. In 2017, we returned home. Since I knew so little about Catholicism, I decided I needed to learn just about everything I could about our Faith so I could answer questions for the kids. From the first book I read (Rome Sweet Home), I’ve been all in.

Homeschooling has been integral to getting where we are today. We made the decision to homeschool when our oldest was 3 and have been intentional about modeling a love of learning for the kids. Today, the kids like to tease me for my voracious reading. Gardening was a good learning experience, and that lead to homesteading. When we made our way back to the Church, our faith became an important part of our “school” days.

In 2022, we rid the house of the internet and cell phones, at least temporarily. Cell phones have gradually made their way back, and we got the internet again in the summer of ’24 when it became necessary for our son to do Drivers Ed and for me to do the training to become a catechist. I’d gladly forego both, but it becomes increasingly difficult to communicate with others the more attached everyone becomes to their devices.

Beside all these things, I love to sew, sing, bake, paint, and create. The garden is my favorite place to be, and it is in the peace of Creation where I have the best conversations with God. For years, I worked as a seamstress; part of that time was in a shop, the rest was from home. I gave that up when we moved to the homestead, though I still sew when I can find the time. I’ve always been very much in love of God, and there was a desire to connect my faith to my hobbies, but it wasn’t until the last few years that I began to see how God was calling me to do that. Between my home parish and our sister parish, I have helped with everything from proclaiming God’s Word in the readings to assisting with faith formation to cleaning and committees.

I have also always enjoyed writing. For 6 years, I wrote a blog chronicling our homesteading adventures. I gave that up with the internet in 2022. Since then, there’s been a still, small prompting to get back to it, and so here I am, chronicling our homestead adventures, but with a new lens.
